A federal lawsuit against CVS Health, one of the leading players in Rhode Island’s next gubernatorial race, alleges the company turned a blind eye to the worsening opioid crisis, allowing illegal prescriptions to be filled and mismanaging its retail pharmacies. The suit claims CVS executives prioritized corporate profits over patient safety, resulting in staff shortages that hindered pharmacists’ ability to detect questionable prescribers. The allegations have already been used against one of the candidates involved, Helena Foulkes, who narrowly lost the Democratic nomination for Rhode Island governor in 2022 and is preparing to run again in 2026.
