CVS to Close Hundreds of Stores in 2025, Including New York Locations

CVS Health plans to close at least 271 stores nationwide this year, including locations in Upstate New York. The pharmacy chain has been closing stores over the past few years, with around 900 closures between 2022 and 2024. The company’s latest annual report revealed that it will also open 30 new pharmacy locations within Target stores.

According to a spokesperson, CVS selected which stores to close based on factors such as population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store density, and community health needs. The closings are part of an enterprise-wide restructuring plan aimed at generating over $500 million in savings. This plan will help simplify the organization, optimize existing retail stores and pharmacies, and streamline operations.

The closures come amid financial challenges faced by rival pharmacies such as Walgreens and Rite Aid. Both have announced significant store closures in recent years due to rising costs, competition, and reduced prescription reimbursements.

CVS stores set for closure in New York state include locations in Albany, North Tonawanda, New York City, and Staten Island.
