At least 11 people have died on the French overseas territory of Mayotte in Cyclone Chido, which made landfall around 40 kilometers south of Pemba’s northern city. The storm is expected to bring further destruction and damage to Mozambique.
Cleanup efforts are underway, but the death toll may be complicated due to cultural practices on the island. Cyclone Chido appeared to have grown in power as it headed towards Mozambique before making landfall.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has responded by providing aid amid reports of damaged homes, schools, and health facilities. French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou said the storm damaged government buildings, hospitals, and makeshift housing, sparking concerns about food, water, and sanitation for the island’s 300,000 inhabitants.
The cyclone is described as one of the most violent since 1934, according to local prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville. The French government has sent rescuers and firefighters to the island, with more aid on the way.
