Cyclone Garance has brought widespread destruction and loss of life to the French island of La Reunion. At least four people died after the storm made landfall on Friday, with wind speeds reaching up to 155 kph (96 mph). The cyclone downgraded from a tropical storm to a strong storm, lifting the red alert, but local authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and limit travel.
The island is struggling with significant disruptions: 953 people are being sheltered in centres, while 160,000 households remain without electricity and 310,000 without access to drinking water. The cyclone’s impact was felt when it blew away roofs and cut off essential services for many residents. The storm exited the southwest of the island several hours after making landfall.
