Cynthia Erivo Shines in Revival of Jesus Christ Superstar

The UK saw a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar last month, featuring Cynthia Erivo as the Holy Messiah, while in Los Angeles, she takes on the role with acclaim. The musical boasts a storied history, with multiple Broadway productions and revivals, tours, and adaptations since its 1971 debut.

In this version, Erivo’s performance is notable, particularly in the second act where Jesus confronts his impending betrayal. Her portrayal conveys despair, helping to make Jesus feel human yet resolute. The show receives high praise for Erivo’s mastery of art form and unbridled talent.

Adam Lambert shines as Judas, capturing a complex character with a punk delight persona. He navigates the role from rebellion to righteousness to sorrow. Hamilton’s Phillipa Soo matches Erivo’s performance as Mary Magdalene, while Raúl Esparza commands the stage as Pontius Pilate.

However, some moments feel forgettable, including the choreography and fanfare of King Herod. The set design is also somewhat underwhelming, but the venue’s holiness elevates the overall experience. Despite unevenness, this rendition captures the tragedy of devotion and betrayal.

As Erivo sings “I don’t know how to love him,” the audience is reminded that both Jesus and Judas are bound by their devotion.
