Czech Republic Hit By Major Blackout

A major blackout hit the Czech Republic on Friday, leaving large parts of the country without electricity. The power outage affected a significant portion of the grid, with train lines in five districts halted, including those in Prague. According to the country’s grid operator, CEPS, the cause was a fallen power line.

The outage had a temporary impact on the city’s subway network, but was largely restored within a short period of time. Czech police have denied any information suggesting the blackout was caused by a cyber attack or terror incident. Meanwhile, neighboring Poland reported no issues with its grid.

The Czech Republic is still reeling from a recent heat wave that highlighted the importance of electricity for cooling systems. The country experienced temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius on Friday, down from 34 degrees the previous day.

As the region faces summer heat, blackouts like this one serve as a reminder of the potential risks and vulnerabilities in the grid.
