D.C. United has appointed René Weiler as their next head coach, the club announced on Wednesday. Weiler brings 20 years of managerial experience to the team, most recently leading Swiss Super League side Servette FC to a 2024 Swiss Cup title. He replaces Troy Lesesne, who parted ways with the team after a midweek US Open Cup loss.
“Weiler is a tactician with a proven ability to implement a clear and disciplined playing style,” said General Manager Ally Mackay. “He builds teams that are organized, aggressive out of possession, and purposeful in attack.” Mackay believes Weiler’s experience developing talent and demanding high standards makes him the ideal leader for D.C. United.
Weiler has coached in several leagues around the world, including J1 League side Kashima Antlers, Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, Belgian titans RSC Anderlecht, and FC Nürnberg in Germany’s second division. He has won six titles, most notably the 2016-17 Belgian Pro League with Anderlecht and the 2019-20 Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly.
The appointment comes at a time when D.C. United is looking to rebuild their team after years of missing major trophies. The Black-and-Red have not won a championship in over a decade, but boast a strong core led by Christian Benteke and Aaron Herrera. Weiler’s arrival may signal changes to the team’s roster during the MLS Secondary Transfer Window, which runs from July 24 to Aug. 21.
