Researchers have found that daily antioxidant supplements can slow down the progression of late-stage dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These supplements help preserve central vision by slowing down the expansion of geographic atrophy regions in the retina. This finding supports the use of AREDS2 supplements for people with late dry AMD.
The study analyzed data from 1,209 eyes and found that the supplements slowed down the expansion of geographic atrophy regions towards the central foveal region of the retina by approximately 55% over an average of three years. The supplements also helped maintain central vision in people with late-stage dry AMD.
