Dalai Lama Offers Framework for Tibet’s Future Autonomy Under China’s Control

The Dalai Lama has unveiled a “framework for the future of Tibet,” a guide to the province’s autonomy under China’s control. The 89-year-old spiritual leader, who is in exile in India, has written the book, titled “A Voice for the Voiceless,” set to be released on March 11.

The framework outlines a possible path forward for Tibet after his death, with the Dalai Lama arguing that the Tibetan people have the right to govern their homeland and that Beijing’s control must end. He warns that constant dissatisfaction among the population can lead to instability.

China has considered Tibet an integral part of its territory since 1950, but many Tibetans fear that Beijing will use his death to appoint a successor under its control. The Dalai Lama has lived in exile since 1959 and formally stepped down from his political role in 2011.

The book describes the Dalai Lama’s discussions with Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping, highlighting his sincerity in seeking a peaceful resolution. Talks between China and Tibetan leaders have been frozen since 2010, but the Dalai Lama believes that finding a middle ground through autonomy is essential for lasting peace.

The current leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Penpa Tsering, has expressed a desire for “lasting autonomy,” not full independence. The Dalai Lama agrees, stating that no totalitarian regime can last forever and that freedom must be protected.
