Dallas Developer Calls for Return of Stanley Marcus Portrait

A portrait of Stanley Marcus, a longtime executive of Neiman Marcus, has been removed from its display at the company’s downtown flagship store in Dallas. The portrait was acquired by Saks Global, the parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue, after it purchased Neiman Marcus earlier this year.

Richard Baker, Saks Global Executive Chairman, revealed that he discovered the portrait while touring vacant offices and saw an opportunity to honor Neiman Marcus’ history. He arranged for the portrait to be shipped to the Saks Global corporate offices in New York.

However, developer Shawn Todd has publicly expressed his desire to have the portrait returned to its original location, stating that it should “stand for another 117 years” like the building itself. Todd reiterated his request after Saks Global announced the store’s closure as final.

The portrait was painted by William A. Foley Jr. in the 1980s and is a notable piece of Neiman Marcus’ history. The artist, Nadia Foley, feels that the portrait belongs in the downtown store, saying “I think it should stay with Neiman’s, even now that Saks is merged with Neiman.”
