Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged his decision to attempt an onside kick while trailing by 10 points, but defended his strategy, saying it was “what it is” and that he won’t change it despite injuries decimating the team’s roster.
Campbell admitted the outcome of the play didn’t work out, with Buffalo’s Mack Hollins grabbing the ball and returning it 38 yards to the Lions’ 5-yard line, but claimed his philosophy remains unchanged. The coach emphasized control and finding ways to win games, taking a combination of science and art in football.
He explained that the decision wasn’t dumb, just different, given the team’s offense was superior to its defense, particularly against Buffalo’s Josh Allen early on in drives. Campbell believes his strategy is reasonable, offering 25-35 yards of field position for the chance to steal a possession. The loss will only increase aggression as injuries continue to mount.
With the latest injury to star running back David Montgomery, Campbell will likely be more aggressive with trick plays or strategies, as seen with the Lions’ successful pass play on Sunday.
