Dana Carvey, 69, addressed his absence at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special on February 20, during an episode of his podcast Fly on the Wall with David Spade. He revealed that he had the flu and was too unwell to travel.
Carvey jokingly admitted that Spade represented their podcast that night, saying “You did wanna be there and you would’ve killed it.” However, Lorne Michaels made light of the situation by joking about a Ryan Reynolds bit that poked fun at his wife Blake Lively’s legal battle with Justin Baldoni.
Despite this, Carvey praised Tom Hanks’ sketch and shouted out Steve Martin’s monologue. He also acknowledged the possibility of a new lawsuit due to Reynolds’ one-liner but thought it was “kinda funny” that he was being tongue-in-cheek about the drama.
On another note, Spade addressed his previous tension with Eddie Murphy, who was in attendance at SNL50. Spade revealed that they are now cool and had no issues during the show. The two even joked about a past joke Spade made that Murphy felt was racist.
Carvey also shared that he and Mike Myers were supposed to do a Wayne’s World sketch but couldn’t make it due to his absence.
