Daredevil: Born Again puts Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) attempt to go straight to the test with a tumultuous trial for his client Hector Ayala. The trial revolves around Hector being accused of killing a cop, but the circumstances surrounding the incident raise questions about the involvement of plainclothes cops who didn’t identify themselves and were manhandling a confidential informant.
As the trial progresses, Matt’s defense becomes increasingly sloppy, with his client paying the ultimate price due to Matt’s impulsive decision. The CI lies on the stand, saying he wasn’t near the scene of the crime, and Matt reveals his name as the vigilante White Tiger in court, putting Hector at risk of further danger.
The episode showcases the limitations of working within the system, which constantly exposes Matt to its constraints. However, this raises questions about better ways for Matt to push for justice through legal means and make his fight against the establishment feel worthwhile.
With a natural flow and structure provided by the courtroom drama genre, Born Again could have made Matt’s efforts to go straight more convincing if he had been more organized and strategic in his approach. Nevertheless, Daredevil: Born Again continues to stream on Disney Plus, with new episodes premiering every Tuesday at 6 p.m. PDT/9 p.m. EDT.
