Dave Filoni Opens Up About Ahsoka Season 2 After Ray Stevenson’s Passing

Disney+ show creator Dave Filoni revealed that his Star Wars series “Ahsoka” was almost cancelled after the passing of actor Ray Stevenson, who played fallen Jedi Master Baylan Skoll. Filoni became visibly emotional during a panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan about the impact of Stevenson’s loss.

Stevenson had a significant role in the future of the series, and Filoni said that continuing without him would be “big challenge.” However, he credited his support team, including co-creator Jon Favreau and co-star Rosario Dawson, for helping him find a way forward. Filoni expressed gratitude for conversations with Stevenson about Baylan’s character, which helped him understand the direction of the show.

The reason for Baylan’s existence is more than just a villainous role, according to Filoni. The character was meant to represent a different journey of a Jedi who has lost his way, mirroring Ahsoka’s path. Due to Stevenson’s passing, the team decided to recast the role with Scottish actor Rory McCann.

Filoni praised McCann for taking on the challenge with respect for Stevenson’s legacy and a deep understanding of the character. He expressed confidence that McCann would bring the character to life in a way that would honor Stevenson’s iconic performance. Filoni believes that McCann will “make the legacy of Ray live on” and is excited to see how he will portray Baylan.

Production on Ahsoka season two is set to begin by the end of April, with no release date announced yet. Fans can expect to see a new beginning for the character and a continuation of the story that Stevenson had envisioned.
