Boxing champion David Benavidez retained his WBC light heavyweight interim title and won the WBA light heavyweight “regular” belt by defeating David Morrell via unanimous decision at a card in Las Vegas. The victory marked Benavidez’s first fight at light heavyweight, as he previously lobbied for a fight against Canelo Alvarez before moving up in weight.
Benavidez had previously defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk and has held the undisputed 175-pound title since his amateur career. Morrell, who turned professional in August 2019, initially scored nine knockouts in his first 10 fights but ultimately went the distance against Radivoje Kalajdzic.
Morrell defended his WBA belt six times before losing to Benavidez.
