David Fincher has been attached to numerous projects over his 35-year career as a filmmaker, including sequels to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s “Rendezvous With Rama,” and a sequel to “World War Z.” However, one franchise he was considered for but didn’t move forward with is “Harry Potter.”
During a recent interview about his upcoming 4K re-release of “Seven,” Fincher revealed that he wanted to bring a darker tone to the series, inspired by films like “Withnail and I.” Warner Bros., however, had a more traditional vision in mind.
Fincher is currently working on an American adaptation of Netflix’s popular Korean series “Squid Game” and a miniseries prequel to “Chinatown,” which he co-wrote with the late screenwriter Robert Towne. When discussing what draws him to new projects, Fincher emphasized that it’s his unique connection to each story, rather than its commercial potential.
“I like the idea of picking and choosing where I’m going to spend my efforts – what I want to underline, and what I want to blur,” he said. Fincher reflected on his personal connections to various films, such as “The Social Network” and “Zodiac,” which sparked his interest in adapting “Gone Girl” and exploring the darker side of human nature.
Fincher’s approach to choosing projects is guided by his passion for storytelling and his desire to bring a unique perspective to each film. With numerous exciting projects on the horizon, Fincher continues to prove himself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors.
