Former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin has been let go by the New Orleans Pelicans after four years in the role. The decision, made on Monday morning, was reportedly made to bring a fresh approach to the team’s front office and build a culture that will deliver sustainable success.
Pelicans Governor Gayle Benson cited the need for change as the reason for Griffin’s dismissal, stating her commitment to hiring the right person to lead basketball operations and delivering an NBA championship to the city. The Pelicans have struggled under Griffin’s leadership, with a record of 209-263 and only two postseason appearances in four years.
Griffin spent his most successful years in Cleveland, where he led the team to a championship in 2016 after LeBron James returned and they acquired Kevin Love. However, it appears that the Pelicans’ lack of depth and injuries, particularly with the absence of Zion Williamson and Dejounte Murray for extended periods, contributed to Griffin’s departure.
The Pelicans’ struggles have been well-documented, with a record of 21-61 this season being the worst since Benson’s husband bought the team in 2012. Griffin will now focus on his work as an NBA analyst, having previously spent time in similar roles before joining the Pelicans in 2019.
