Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery will miss the rest of the season after suffering a sprained MCL in Sunday’s 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Coach Dan Campbell said that Montgomery, who had surgery on Monday, is out for the year due to a severe injury.
Montgomery’s absence is part of a growing list of key player injuries for the Lions. Alim McNeill sustained a torn ACL, ending his season, while Carlton Davis III suffered a fractured jaw and will undergo surgery. Khalil Dorsey also had an ankle injury that ended his season.
The losses are further tests for a Lions defense already depleted by 13 players on the injured reserve list. Aidan Hutchinson, who previously suffered a fractured tibia and fibula, is now another player to be sidelined.
Despite these setbacks, coach Campbell remains focused on finishing the season strong. “We acknowledge that we’ve lost good players,” he said, “but nobody cares about the injuries. Some guys are going to have an unbelievable opportunity because of what’s happened.”
Montgomery was a key player for the Lions, ranking second in rushing yards and leading the team with 12 rushing touchdowns. His absence is felt, especially alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, who leads the team with over 1,000 rushing yards.
The loss to the Bills also ends the Lions’ 11-game winning streak, but they remain in the top spot in the NFC playoff bracket. With three games left, Campbell wants his team to focus on their remaining chances rather than getting caught up in injuries.
