David Roddy Heads Back to Minnesota after Colorado State Move

Gophers’ coaching staff moves again, this time for new recruit David Roddy, who joins the program amidst changes in recruiting landscape.

David Roddy, a 6-foot-5 power forward, has signed with the University of Minnesota despite being offered by several other programs. The 2022 NBA draft pick said he was drawn to Gophers head coach Niko Medved and new assistant Dave Thorson, who had been an influential figure in his decision.

Roddy’s arrival coincides with significant changes at Colorado State, where the Rams finished with a 25-6 record and a No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament last season. The team was on the rise under Medved and Thorson, who helped Roddy’s stock increase.

The news comes as a surprise to some, given that Medved was set to join Gophers’ coaching staff earlier this week. However, Roddy said he was attracted to the Gophers’ program and the opportunity to work with Medved and Thorson.

Roddy had already experienced success at Colorado State, helping the Rams reach the semifinals of the NIT and making an NCAA tournament appearance in 2021 before being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies. He currently plays for both the Houston Rockets and Rio Grande Vipers on a two-way contract.
