A tribute event was held at Capital One Arena on Sunday afternoon to honor the victims of D.C.’s January plane crash, along with first responders. Thirteen-year-old Isabella Aparicio’s powerful performance left the audience speechless.
Isabella lost her brother Franco and father Luciano in the crash. Dmitri Kolluch said, “It was beautiful… It was good for many people on many different levels.”
The event featured figure skaters from around the country, including Olympian Johnny Weir. The program also included performances by current and former skaters.
A panel of 67 stars displayed on the dasher boards commemorated each of the victims. The D.C. Fire and EMS Department flew an American flag between two ladder trucks as a tribute. Representatives from local teams showcased the community’s solidarity, while therapy dogs were available for families who chose to attend.
The Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation (MSEF) is hosting an online benefit auction with proceeds going towards affected families and first responders through its Legacy on Ice program. The event co-hosted by 1988 and 1992 Olympic champions features a lineup of skating stars, including Jason Brown and Nancy Kerrigan.
