A recent foreword by Dungeons & Dragons historian Jon Peterson has sparked controversy over the game’s original 1974 edition. Peterson highlighted “virtual catalogue of insensitive and derogatory language” that includes hurtful words towards people with disabilities, being old or overweight, indigenous groups, Black people, and women. The game also featured slavery as a commercial transaction.
Critics argued that the foreword unfairly smeared creator Gary Gygax, who passed away in 2008, labeling him a misogynist and racist. However, some defenders, like Elon Musk, came to Gygax’s defense, saying it was unfair to trash his legacy.
The controversy has led to a debate about inclusivity in D&D. While some critics see the game’s changes as watering down its challenges and risks, others believe that making Orcs more relatable by introducing family dynamics is a step towards greater representation.
Despite this, sales figures suggest that players are embracing the new inclusive direction of the game. The 2024 Player’s Handbook has become the fastest-selling publication in company history, with some critics warning that reducing the complexity of fantasy world-building to fit modern sensibilities undermines the game’s core values.
