Deadly Night in Kyiv: Russia Launches Wave of Missiles and Drones

Russian missiles and drones pounded Ukraine overnight Sunday, leaving residents without sleep and killing at least two people. The Ukrainian Air Force said 450 missiles and drones were launched into the country, with most shot down but 23 striking across three locations.

Nationwide air raid warnings were issued in most regions of Ukraine, with reports of fires breaking out in several cities. In Kyiv, a kindergarten caught fire, along with residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelensky described Russian strikes as an “assault on humanity.”

Eyewitnesses described the chaos and destruction caused by the attacks, with one resident saying his apartment building was hit, leaving him homeless. Others spoke of the bravery and resilience of those who sheltered in place during the attacks.

The latest strike includes cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as advanced Kinzhal missiles that are difficult to intercept. This is not the first wave of strikes by Russia in recent weeks, which have targeted cities far from the frontline. In response, Ukraine’s forces have been striking deep into Russian territory.

The long-range drone attacks also caused travel chaos at Moscow’s airports, with thousands of passengers forced to queue or sleep on the floor due to flight delays and cancelations. The Kremlin has said it is “ready to move quickly” on achieving a peace deal with Ukraine, but its main goal remains to achieve its objectives.
