Deadly Tibet Earthquake Kills Over 120 People, Injures Hundreds

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Himalayas on Tuesday morning, killing over 120 people and injuring almost 200 more in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The quake also triggered aftershocks and tremors in neighboring Nepal and India.

According to local Chinese media, at least 126 fatalities have been reported in Shigatse city, with many buildings collapsing due to strong tremors. In Nepal, residents felt a strong earthquake but no injuries or damage were reported, while shudders were also felt in northern India’s state of Bihar.

The quake had an epicenter depth of 10 kilometers and was located about 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Everest. Aftershocks measuring up to 4.4 in magnitude were recorded, with emergency workers searching for victims and survivors in the rubble.

The region is prone to earthquakes due to its seismically active nature and location where the India and Eurasia plates clash. Tuesday’s quake was the most powerful within a 200-kilometer radius in the last five years, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
