Decentralized Social Network Bluesky Sees Surge in User-Generated Reports

Bluesky, a decentralized social network, has seen its user base grow ninefold to 25.94 million in 2024, but with this increase comes more potential for trouble. To address the issue, the platform has expanded its content-moderation team to around 100 moderators.

In 2024, users submitted 6.48 million reports to Bluesky’s moderation service, a 17x increase from 2023. The majority of these reports were due to antisocial behavior, including harassment and trolling, which accounted for 1.75 million reports. Misleading content was another major issue, with 1.2 million reports filed.

To tackle the influx of reports, Bluesky increased its Portuguese-language moderation team, added automated tooling for high-risk areas like child safety, and hired external moderators. The platform has taken down 66,308 accounts, while its automated systems removed 35,842 accounts due to spam or being part of a bot network.

Users can currently appeal moderation decisions via email, but Bluesky plans to integrate this feature within the app in 2025, aiming to streamline user communication. The company is also working on a paid subscription model, which could cost $8 per month, similar to X Premium.
