Deebo Samuel Traded to Washington Commanders

Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has requested a trade, which the team granted on March 1. He was sent to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

Samuel cited his desire to join a winning organization as his primary reason for leaving the 49ers. The Commanders’ commitment to him, including guaranteeing $17 million of his 2025 salary and adding incentives, also played a role.

The 31-year-old receiver’s time with the 49ers was marked by inconsistency, with only 806 scrimmage yards and four total touchdowns last season. He believes the Commanders’ trust in him will motivate him to perform at his best.

Samuel, who had previously identified five preferred destinations for a trade, has expressed excitement about joining a team on the rise, having made the NFC Championship Game last season. His decision was reportedly not as straightforward as it seemed, given his strong relationships with former 49ers teammates and staff.
