Deezer Cracks Down on AI-Generated Music Streaming Fraud

Music streaming service Deezer has introduced an AI song tag to combat music streaming fraud. The company flags albums with AI-generated songs, warning listeners that some tracks were created using song generators. This move comes as the industry grapples with a surge in AI-generated music uploaded to its platform.

According to Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier, 18% of daily uploads are now completely AI generated, up from 10% just three months ago. The company is committed to safeguarding artists’ rights as copyright law is being questioned in favor of training AI models.

Deezer’s tool detects patterns in the complex signals created by AI music generators, which seem unable to produce songs without subtle yet recognizable patterns. The company responds by generating new songs to teach its algorithm and fight back against AI-generated fraudsters.

To combat this issue, Deezer will cut off royalty payments for any AI songs used for “stream manipulation.” This move underscores the disruption caused by generative AI systems, which are trained on internet data without paying for it.
