Spotify rival Deezer has introduced an AI tagging system for music streaming, claiming it can detect 100% AI-generated tracks from popular generative models. The move aims to combat the growing issue of music streaming fraud, which risks diluting royalty payments and reducing discovery opportunities for artists.
Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the platform detects a significant uptick in AI-generated content since January, with up to 70% of streams generated by fully AI-generated tracks being fraudulent. The company excludes these tracks from royalty payments to minimize their impact on artist remuneration.
The new system will clearly show users which albums include fully AI-generated tracks, helping to identify and flag potential fraud. Deezer says the primary purpose of uploading AI-generated music is fraudulent, accounting for only 0.5% of total streams but potentially siphoning billions of dollars away from artists and rights holders every year.
To address this issue, Deezer has implemented an “artist-centric” payment model with Universal Music Group, rewarding artists with large followings who are actively sought by subscribers. The company has also deleted 26 million “useless” tracks from its platform since launching the model.
Industry experts warn that AI-generated music could cannibalize up to 24% of music creators’ revenues by 2028. Deezer commits to safeguarding artists’ rights and increasing transparency, believing a responsible approach is key to building trust with users and the music industry.
