Deion Sanders Emerges as Strong Contender for Cleveland Browns Starting QB Role

Cleveland Browns quarterback competition continues to unfold ahead of their first preseason game. According to a recent report from The Athletic’s Zac Jackson, Joe Flacco is now considered the “strong favorite” to be the starting quarterback, with Kenny Pickett recovering from a hamstring injury.

Pickett, who has been working diligently to regain speed, acknowledged losing ground in his recovery. Meanwhile, Flacco has demonstrated impressive form over the last two days of training camp, surpassing his previous best performances. The Browns’ coach, Kevin Stefanski, had cautioned against reading into the team’s rep divisions during training camp, but Flacco’s recent actions have signaled that he is in line to start.

Shedeur Sanders, a former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback, has shown remarkable accuracy despite missing a day of practice due to arm soreness. The rookie has outperformed Dillon Gabriel and received fewer reps compared to the other quarterbacks. Only Flacco and Sanders have avoided interceptions in training camp so far.

Sanders completed 74% of his passes in college, recording 4,134 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. He has been practicing with both the third-team offense and second-team unit, but the competition for the starting role is still intense.

The Browns’ first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers is on August 8. The team will need to manage the roster effectively during the preseason, balancing the roles of Pickett, Flacco, Sanders, and Gabriel.
