Delaware County at Risk of Public Health Crisis Amid Crozer Health Bankruptcy

Crozer Health’s parent company, Prospect Medical Holdings, has filed for bankruptcy, sending shockwaves through the Delaware County community. Despite the filing, hospitals such as Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital are expected to continue operating.

Local politicians, including state Sen. Tim Kearney and Rep. Carol Kazeem, have expressed concerns that the bankruptcy will worsen the already dire situation at Crozer. The system has faced significant cutbacks in services and staff, leading to safety problems and increased reliance on other health systems for support.

“We’re not going to let it just go,” said Rep. Kazeem. “We’re going to continuously fight.” She plans to revive a proposed law that would ban for-profit companies from owning or operating hospitals in Pennsylvania.

The bankruptcy filing has also put on hold a petition by the state attorney general asking for control of the financially beleaguered health system. However, officials fear that the closure of Crozer-Chester could lead to a shortage of services in the area, with patients having to travel nearly 10 miles to access care at nearby hospitals.

Crozer operates several critical services, including a Level 1 trauma center and maternity services. The community is rallying around the system, with stakeholders expressing fear that the bankruptcy will further deteriorate an already dire situation.
