A presumptive positive detection of H5N1 avian influenza has been confirmed in snow geese found in coastal Sussex County waters. This is the first confirmation of the virus in wild birds on Delmarva since May 2022, when it was detected in black vultures in Maryland.
The infected birds were reported to be found at Prime Hook Beach and other locations along the coast. DNREC advises against touching or handling sick or dead birds due to the risk of transmission.
Avian influenza is a highly contagious airborne virus that spreads quickly among birds through nasal and eye secretions, manure, and contact with contaminated surfaces. Snow geese are migratory birds known for forming large flocks in Delaware each winter, making them susceptible to acquiring the virus.
However, officials note that the risk of transmission to humans is low, with only a few reported cases of human infection due to avian influenza. Waterfowl hunters and anyone coming across a dead or sick wild bird should take precautions when handling the bird.
Commercial poultry producers are advised to follow biosecurity protocols for HPAI, while backyard flock owners should contact the Delaware Poultry Health Hotline if they notice any signs of the disease in their flock. For more information on avian influenza, visit https://de.gov/poultry.
