Delta 767-400 Makes Emergency Landing at LAX Due to Engine Fire

A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-400 experienced an engine fire on board, forcing it to make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday. The incident occurred when the crew declared an emergency due to a left-hand engine fire indication. The aircraft, carrying 224 people, was climbing out of LAX’s runway 25R when the crew reported the issue.

The crew chose to descend to 3,000 feet and landed safely at runway 25L, with the engine fire extinguished approximately 15 minutes after takeoff. Runway 25L was temporarily closed for inspection.

According to reports from ground observers, flames were visible coming from the left-hand engine. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that Delta Air Lines Flight 446 landed safely and reported an engine fire on board.

The FAA stated: “Delta Air Lines Flight 446 safely landed after returning to Los Angeles International Airport around 2:10 p.m. local time on Friday, July 18 due to a reported engine fire.”

Several commenters weighed in on the incident, with some suggesting that the crew’s decision to abort takeoff was prudent, while others expressed concerns about the procedure used by air traffic control (ATC).
