Delta Air Lines has pushed back against online rumors claiming that the crew on board Flight 4819, which crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson Airport on Monday, were not qualified for their positions.
The airline’s statement says that the captain was hired in October 2007 by Mesaba Airlines and served as an active duty captain before joining Delta Air Lines. The statement also denies claims that the first officer failed training events or did not meet federal requirements for flight experience.
According to Delta, both the captain and first officer are FAA certified and qualified for their positions. The airline has offered $30,000 to each of the 80 victims on board Flight 4819, including passengers and crew members, with no strings attached.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian has also defended the Trump administration’s budget cuts, saying that they did not negatively impact aviation safety. He explained that the cuts were in non-critical safety functions and did not affect a significant number of employees at the FAA.
