A Delta Air Lines flight was diverted mid-flight due to severe turbulence that injured 25 people on board, forcing an emergency landing at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The Airbus A330-900 took off from Salt Lake City bound for Amsterdam when it hit turbulence around 40 minutes after takeoff. Radar showed storms in the Rockies and Plains regions, which may have contributed to the severe conditions.
According to passengers, the plane suddenly rose over 1,000 feet before dropping significantly, causing several collisions with overhead carts that injured people who were not buckled up. “They hit the ceiling, and then they fell to the ground,” said Leann Clement-Nash. “It happened several times, so it was really scary.”
Twenty-five passengers were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and care. Delta expressed gratitude to emergency responders involved in the incident. Serious injuries from turbulence are rare but may be becoming more common due to climate change altering the jet stream.
