Delta Flights Diverted to Alabama, Passengers Stuck Overnight

Two Delta flights from Mexico were diverted to Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama due to weather risks on April 10. The two flights, Flight 1828 and Flight 599, were originally headed to Atlanta but were redirected to the airport without customs facilities, leaving nearly 300 international passengers stranded on board for several hours.

The airline apologized to customers for the experience and offered full refunds to each passenger. Passengers were confined to their seats until after 5 a.m., when they were allowed to enter the airport. One passenger described being “literally stuck” on the plane due to lack of customs facilities at the Montgomery Regional Airport.

The diversion was made due to intense storms in the Southeast U.S. and the nearby Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, which has customs, was not a feasible option for the diverted planes. The airport’s website stated that flights resumed after 4 a.m., but passengers were left waiting on board for an extended period.
