Delta Air Lines is offering $30,000 to each of the 76 passengers who were on board the plane that crashed and flipped over at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday. The airline said the offer came with “no strings attached” and does not affect rights.
The 21 passengers taken to hospitals have been released by Wednesday morning, with none suffering life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian confirmed that the flight was crewed by an experienced team, but provided limited details about the incident. A Canadian law firm, Rochon Genova, has been retained by some passengers to explore compensation options.
According to international treaties, airlines like Delta are required to make advance payments to passengers in cases of injury or death resulting from international aviation accidents. The amount of payment varies depending on the severity of the injury.
In a similar incident in 2013, Asiana Airlines made an offer of $10,000 to each surviving passenger following a crash landing in San Francisco that killed three people. However, dozens of lawsuits were filed against the airline and the plane’s manufacturer in the US, with some later reaching settlements for undisclosed amounts.
