A Delta Air Lines regional jet crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, but miraculously, all 80 people on board were able to exit the plane safely. The Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft, operated by Minneapolis-based regional airline Endeavor Air, flipped upside down on the snow-covered tarmac.
Eighteen passengers were injured and taken to hospitals, with at least three in critical condition, including a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation into the crash, which occurred around 2:45 p.m. local time.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, but conditions at the time were harsh, with westerly winds gusting up to 40 mph and snow showers in the area. The airport had warned of difficult conditions earlier that day, with reduced visibility and high winds.
Air traffic control communications indicated that none of the several pilots who landed in Toronto before the crash mentioned any issues with the runway. Investigators will try to determine the conditions of the runway at the time of the landing.
