Democrats Unyielding in Shutdown After Election Wins

President Trump declared the shutdown hurt his party on Tuesday. It boosted Democrats’ resolve to continue their fight against government closure. Senate Democrats dug deeper into their demand that President Trump negotiate with them over health care subsidies for reopening the government.

A recent election victory gave a jolt of energy to Democratic efforts, making it harder for bipartisan talks to find an off-ramp. Some centrist Democrats met privately with Republicans on spending legislation to fund the government. However, Mr. Trump’s comments suggested new hope among Democrats that he and G.O.P. leaders would negotiate.

Senator Chuck Schumer said President Trump should meet with them to end the crisis and his shutdown, which hurt him badly in the election. The group of Senate Democrats who were looking for a way out of the shutdown met again on Wednesday, describing their talks as “productive.” They will continue discussions but want to see whether Mr. Trump would engage with their party.

Mr. Trump remains fixated on ending the shutdown without negotiating with Democrats. He thinks Senate Republicans should get rid of the legislative filibuster to push through a funding bill. However, most Republicans oppose this idea. If the shutdown continues, other Republicans might be forced to re-evaluate their stance on the issue.
