Den of Thieves 2: Pantera Takes Top Spot

Lionsgate’s crime sequel “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” has debuted at number one on the domestic charts, earning $5.8 million from 3,008 theaters on its opening day. The film’s pace is ahead of its predecessor, which opened to $5.6 million in January 2018.

The movie, directed by Christian Gudegast and starring Gerard Butler as Big Nick, follows the character abroad in Europe to track down a heist mastermind. With a modest production budget of $40 million, Lionsgate is banking on the film being a steady draw through the typically slow month of January.

Other notable releases include Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man,” which expanded to 1,291 venues and earned $580,000 on its opening day; Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” in second place with $2.9 million; Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in fourth with a projected $8.6 million; and Focus Features’ “Nosferatu” taking fifth place with $6.3 million.

The weekend’s box office is quiet, largely due to devastating wildfires that have left several local theaters shuttered in the Los Angeles area.
