Pantera has taken the throne, overtaking Mufasa as the top-grossing film in the US box office this weekend. The Lion King’s sequel, Den of Thieves 2, raked in $15.5 million, surpassing Mufasa’s $13.2 million. The film, starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., debuted at No. 1 after weeks of competition from other family-friendly films.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3, now in its fourth week, held strong with $11 million this weekend, bringing its cumulative domestic gross to $204.5 million. In contrast, Mufasa tapped out domestically with a cumulative total of $188.7 million.
Historical horror Nosferatu, starring Robert Eggers, took the fourth spot with $6.8 million in earnings, now at $81.8 million. Meanwhile, Moana 2 rounded out the top five with $6.5 million, and Wicked, a behemoth Broadway adaptation, dominated the leaderboard with its staggering $459 million cumulative domestic earnings.
The global box office saw similar results, with Mufasa maintaining its lead, followed by Sonic, Nosferatu, and Den of Thieves 2. New films, including Chinese-language thriller Octupus with Broken Arms, made appearances on the global chart, while new releases awaited in next weekend’s slate of premieres.
