Denmark has announced plans to boost its defense spending, committing an additional 14.6 billion Danish crowns ($2.05bn) into regional security measures. The country is resisting U.S. demands from President Donald Trump to hand over control of Greenland, a strategic territory rich in resources and critical for transatlantic navigation.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized the need for European unity to address growing threats on the continent. Highlighting Denmark’s role as a small yet influential nation within Europe, she stressed its commitment to working with allies like France and Germany to meet security challenges.
The investment includes expanded military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions, along with advanced technology such as new ships, drones, and satellite capabilities. Greenland, already home to significant mineral resources, is seen as a vital asset for Europe’s strategic interests. While Denmark bears responsibility for Greenland’s security, its limited military capabilities raise concerns about national sovereignty.
The plan also outlines measures to enhance deterrence, including increased surveillance andicebreaker patrols. This effort is part of broader efforts by the European Union to strengthen defense capabilities while addressing decades of funding cuts.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition that cooperation among nations is essential to tackle complex security challenges in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
