Denmark’s parliament member Rasmus Jarlov has sparked controversy after speculating on social media that the US may demand Greenland from Denmark due to its recent purchase of F-35 fighter jets.
Jarlov, a Conservative People’s Party member, wrote on X that he regrets helping approve the country’s purchase, claiming the US could remotely disable the planes and threaten military action if Denmark refuses to hand over the island. However, the official X account for the F-35 manufacturer denied this claim.
Despite this, Jarlov believes the US may still leverage the situation by cutting off supply of spare parts, aiming to weaken Russia and enhance its influence in Europe.
The US President Donald Trump had previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing national security concerns during his March address to Congress. The island’s natural resources and minerals make it an attractive location for mining operations, although Trump has shown no interest in exploiting these opportunities.
