Denmark Zoo Asks for Donated Pets to Feed Captive Animals

A zoo in Denmark has sparked controversy by asking people to donate their surplus pets to feed captive animals, with the goal of mimicking the natural food chain and ensuring animal welfare.

The Aalborg Zoo posted on Facebook that they accept donations of chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, and other small animals, which will be “gently euthanized” and fed to predators like European lynx. The zoo claims this practice is common in Denmark and helps maintain the natural behavior and nutrition of its animals.

However, many commenters were outraged by the idea, citing concerns over animal welfare and the potential for healthy pets being sent to their deaths. Experts say that providing whole animal parts, including fur, bones, and organs, is essential for captive carnivores to mimic their wild diet.

While some zoos in the US follow similar practices, others have expressed concern about the ethics of donating animals for food. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has stated that its member zoos do not engage in this practice.
