Denzel Washington is set to star in Spike Lee’s latest film, “Highest 2 Lowest”, alongside Jeffrey Wright. The two directors have teamed up five times before, and their creative chemistry remains strong.
The movie follows a music industry mogul who becomes the target of a ransom plot in present-day New York City. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s classic “High and Low”, Lee reimagines the story on the streets of NYC, capturing its grit and high stakes.
Washington plays a character with “the best ears in the business”, whose life is thrown into chaos when he becomes the target of the plot. The film also features Wright as an actor known for disappearing into every role he takes on.
In this reunion, Lee’s vision meets Washington’s presence and Wright’s versatility. Washington has spoken about not wanting to take on roles that may spiritually conflict with his own faith.
The movie explores themes of leadership and following one’s instincts, a lesson Wright believes is crucial in navigating life. When asked about working with Washington, Wright praised the actor’s freedom and ability to bring his own performance.
“Highest 2 Lowest” opens in theaters nationwide on August 15, with AppleTV+ streaming rights set for September 5.
