Denzel Washington has taken the snubbing of his Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars in stride. In an interview with The New York Times, he joked about not getting a nod despite receiving rave reviews and nominations from other award shows. Despite this, he remains committed to his craft, saying “I’m happy for all that did, and I’m happy with what I’m doing.”
Washington has had a storied career, winning Oscars in 1988 and 2002, as well as six additional Best Actor nods. He reflected on his dynamic with co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, who’s playing Iago to Washington’s Othello on stage. The actor praised Gyllenhaal, calling him “a complicated guy” who brings a unique energy to their performance.
Washington also discussed his approach to rehearsing for the role, saying he prefers not to learn lines too early to maintain a sense of vulnerability and connection with the character. He highlighted the advantage of having performed the piece earlier in his career, citing that he still “kinda remember” it, but notes that it’s not word-for-word.
Washington concluded by stating that he’s “getting wiser” with age and embracing his role as a mentor and educator in the industry. His dedication to his craft remains unwavering despite the snub from the Academy.
