Denzel Washington Honored at Cannes with Rare Palme d’Or Award

Denzel Washington was surprised with an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night. The award, which has been given only 21 times, recognizes a career achievement in filmmaking. Spike Lee presented the honor to Washington ahead of an out-of-competition screening of their new film, “Highest 2 Lowest”. Washington was visibly emotional and expressed his gratitude for the recognition.

Washington and Lee’s collaboration on “Highest 2 Lowest” marks their first film together in nearly 20 years. The film is also a fifth project between the two. Washington will continue to perform in Broadway’s production of Othello, which has been dark on Mondays like most productions.

This year’s honorary Palme was previously awarded to Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, and other notable actors. It was first presented in 2002 to honor individuals for their contributions to cinema. The award has also been given to organizations such as Studio Ghibli.

Washington is a two-time Oscar winner, with accolades including the Academy Award, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Tony Award.
