Denzel Washington’s Misguided “Othello” Falls Flat

The new production of Shakespeare’s “Othello” at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, starring Denzel Washington, has broken box office records despite its clumsy staging and lackluster direction. Director Kenny Leon’s decision to set the play in a near-future setting results in a dull and uninspired world that fails to engage the audience.

Washington shines as the titular character, delivering silky smooth lines with his characteristic authority. However, the supporting cast, particularly Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, is let down by the poor staging. The director’s refusal to add any meaningful commentary on the dystopian themes of the play results in a production that feels like a shallow exercise.

The problem lies in the lack of clarity and coherence in the set design, which fails to evoke the necessary atmosphere for the tragic events that unfold. Washington’s performance is hampered by a dull backdrop that detracts from his otherwise excellent delivery of the Bard’s lines.

Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Iago is particularly effective, capturing the modern nuances of the character’s sly and manipulative nature. However, even his talent cannot elevate this misfired production.

Ultimately, the success of Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal cannot compensate for the shortcomings of Kenny Leon’s direction. The result is a lackluster “Othello” that fails to deliver on its promise of Shakespearean drama.
