Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson underwent surgery for a torn right Achilles tendon on Thursday, according to the team. The injury is expected to keep him out of action for at least seven months, potentially impacting his availability for the 2025 season. This is not the first time Watson has suffered an Achilles injury; he initially tore it in October last year and missed significant playing time.
The Browns’ general manager, Andrew Berry, downplayed the impact on their offseason plans at quarterback, citing the limited experience of backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Jameis Winston and Bailey Zappe are also competing for the starting spot, with the team holding the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
Watson still has two years remaining on his five-year, $230 million contract, which carries significant cap hits. The Browns have reworked his deal to add void years, allowing them to manage his salary cap through 2030.
