Detroit Lions’ David Montgomery Sparks Rebranding Effort for Boy Scouts of America

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery’s viral social media moment has helped boost the morale of the Boy Scouts of America, now rebranded as Scouting America. Until his season-ending injury on Sunday, Montgomery was a viral sensation, appearing in memes that connected his football prowess to his youth in the organization.

As an Eagle Scout and Scouting Ambassador, Montgomery was named by Scouting America in October to promote the organization’s values. The ambassador position comes with a platform for him to help encourage young people to participate in scouting while also showcasing their ability to play sports.

With Montgomery now out of commission for the rest of the season, the Michigan Crossroads Council is asking its members to record encouraging get-well video messages for him. Scouts are asked to take 5- to 15-second clips wearing their Scout uniform or gear and to send them to [email protected].

The organization faces significant challenges, including a decline in membership and revenue since the 1970s. In May, Scouting America announced it would be rebranding after decades-long losses. However, some loyal supporters feel the new name change is a repudiation of the organization’s core mission to help boys grow up.

Despite these challenges, Montgomery remains committed to promoting Scouting values and has gone above and beyond in his ambassador role. The 27-year-old has been open about how Scouting helped shape his character and created a stronger sense of responsibility and teamwork.

Montgomery is just one of 17 NFL players who are Eagle Scouts. His dedication to the organization’s mission serves as an inspiration to many, and his story continues to be shared with fans on social media.
