Detroit Red Wings Fire Coach Derek Lalonde, Hire Todd McLellan

The Detroit Red Wings have made a major change by firing coach Derek Lalonde on Thursday and naming Todd McLellan as his replacement. The move comes with the team on a three-game skid and having lost nine of their past 12 games. General manager Steve Yzerman has opted for a new direction, citing a desire to revitalize the team’s performance.

McLellan, 57, brings extensive experience in the NHL, having coached four teams, including the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, and now Detroit. His career record stands at 598-412-134, with nine playoff appearances and two Western Conference finals under his belt. McLellan previously worked as an assistant coach for the Red Wings from 2005 to 2013.

Lalonde, 52, was nearly midway through his third season with the Red Wings after winning two Stanley Cups as an assistant with Tampa Bay. He compiled a record of 89-86-23 during his tenure.

The move marks the fourth coaching change in the NHL this season and 15th overall, following Rick Bowness’ retirement, Jim Montgomery’s firing by the Boston Bruins, and Luke Richardson’s departure from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Red Wings now face their first test under McLellan, taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.
