DHS Secretary Noem Rescinds Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary has rescinded the temporary protected status for Haitians living in the United States, effective immediately. The decision comes after a 17-year extension that was previously granted to address the country’s post-earthquake recovery efforts.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS), initially implemented in 2009, allowed eligible Haitian nationals and certain derivative beneficiaries to remain in the US without fear of deportation. However, the decision to rescind it indicates a shift towards stricter immigration policies.

The move has sparked concern among advocacy groups, who argue that it may lead to the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in the US, many of whom have built lives and families here.
